SISTEMA ARMONICO
Green connections looking beyond Xylella
TEAM: arch. Valentina Maffeo | ing. Andrea Perrotta
CONTEXT The progressive desertification of Salento, driven by climate change, intensive agriculture and the spread of Xylella fastidiosa, is causing the loss of centuries-old olive trees, biodiversity and local landscape identity. This environmental decline is also generating a profound sense of disorientation within local communities. VISION Ancient olive trees embody the long-standing relationship between people and nature. Beyond their productive value, they represent a living cultural and anthropological heritage, deeply connected to the history and identity of Salento. Preserving their memory and redefining their role is essential to the future evolution of the landscape. CONCEPT The project pursues two main objectives: rebuilding the connection between the territory and its collective memory, and countering desertification through sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, ecotourism and cultural production. The strategy is structured around five main actions.

THE FALLEN CHURCH | CHIESA DIRUTA | 2021
GROTTOLE | MATERA | ITALY
DESIGNER: arch. Valentina Maffeo
Ideas competition for the redesign and adaptive reuse of Chiesa Diruta.
ONCE UPON A TIME… AND STILL TODAY Chiesa Diruta, also known as the ruins of the Church of Saints Luke and Julian, was built in the early sixteenth century. It originally served as a parish church and place of worship in the historic centre of Grottole. Following repeated structural collapses, the building has remained abandoned and in a state of ruin for centuries. CONCEPT Chiesa Diruta is reimagined as a new venue for art and events. A glass-and-steel volume is inserted within the historic architecture, allowing the original structure to remain fully visible and legible. The transparency of glass, the strength of steel and the warmth of wood define the material language of the project. The design includes polished concrete flooring and natural plaster finishes. The intervention incorporates seismic-resistant construction techniques and the structural consolidation of the entire building. The proposal reconfigures the interior spaces and introduces a series of auditoriums designed to host artistic, museum, musical and entertainment events.

UMBRIA | ITALY
Ideas competition for a research project exploring the relationship between art and urban regeneration.
DESIGNERS: arch. Greta Solari | arch. Valentina Maffeo
CONCEPT
Foresta was developed within Terni Urban Regeneration, a project combining public policy, artistic practices and social innovation.
Its aim was to stimulate debate on urban regeneration, test new design approaches and build synergies with the local community.
MISSION
Foresta is a village of tree houses located along the entrance avenue. From 16 to 25 September 2016, five artists inhabited the structures and developed their own interpretations of the relationship between people and nature.
The project became the central theme of the 2016 edition of the Festival of Contemporary Creation, entitled Anthropocene.
